I stared at the calendar.
October 24 was circled in green.
“When did he call?”
“Yesterday. I told him I couldn’t make changes without speaking to you.”
I thanked her and confirmed that I absolutely wanted to keep my appointment.
Then I called Nick.
“Did you try to cancel my maternity photographs?”
“I only asked about the refund.”
“Why?”
“Because you’ve had a difficult few weeks. I thought saving the money might help.”
I almost couldn’t believe it.
After everything that had happened, he was still making decisions about my belongings, my money, and my plans without asking me.
“Nick, whose photographs are they?”
“Anna, we’re having a baby together.”
“Whose appointment did you try to change?”
He went silent.
And I realized he still hadn’t fully understood the problem.
Nick came over Thursday evening because I’d agreed to speak with him.
He stood awkwardly inside the doorway.
