My husband gave away every maternity dress I owned while I was at work. When I asked what I was supposed to wear, he kept spreading mustard on his sandwich.

“You have my word that I’ll ask.”

Nick had already left to watch football with friends.

He’d left a note beside the coffee maker telling me we could discuss everything once I’d calmed down.

Apparently, my emotions were the problem.

Not the empty wardrobe.

Not my missing work uniforms.

Not the fact that his sister was making money from my belongings.

At 9:41, Elaine called again.

“Tara would like to speak with you. Are you ready?”

I sat on the edge of the bed.

“Yes.”

Tara sounded as though she’d been crying.

“Anna, the green dress is still here. Someone paid for it, but she hasn’t collected it yet. I’m refunding her.”

“Good. What about everything else?”

She hesitated.

“Five items have already been picked up.”

My chest tightened.

“How much did you get?”

“Three hundred and ten dollars.”

I closed my eyes.

Those five pieces had originally cost me $640.
