“He kept his promise,” Hannah whispered, her hand on Peter’s heart. “He said he’d be here. He’s here.”
“He’s here,” Peter said. “He never left. He just needed me to bring him.”
Chapter 5: The Family Luke Built From His Own Ending
That was six years ago.
Peter is family now. There’s no other word for it. The man who carries my son’s heart comes to every one of Hannah’s birthdays, and to holidays, and his two children — who have their father because my son gave him a heart — call me a kind of honorary grandmother, and Hannah a kind of aunt. Luke, in dying, didn’t just save his sister. He built a whole second family out of his own ending, and stitched it to ours, and somehow made the worst thing that ever happened to me into a room full of people who exist because my boy was brave.
I finally met the others, too. After Peter, I found the courage I hadn’t had for eighteen years. The woman who has Luke’s liver. The man who sees through Luke’s corneas. They are all out there, living, and I was so afraid for so long that meeting them would break me — and instead it did the opposite. My son is not only in a grave. He is in a heart that beats, eyes that see, a body that walks in the sun. He scattered himself across the living the way a person scatters seeds, and eighteen years later I got to walk through the garden of it.
