MY SON DIED SAVING HIS 5-YEAR-OLD SISTER WITH A TRANSPLANT. ON HER 18TH BIRTHDAY

Hannah is twenty-four now. She’s a nurse — of course she is, the sister saved by her brother’s body, spending her life saving other people’s. She became an organ donor advocate. She tells Luke’s story to anyone who’ll listen, to get people to register, because every card on a donor registry is a promise waiting to be kept, and my daughter knows better than anyone alive what one of those promises is worth.

Here’s what I learned, opening my door to the man who carries my son’s heart.

Love does not end when a life does. My son was eighteen years old, and in the last clear days he had, he did not spend them afraid. He spent them making sure his little sister would never doubt she was loved, planning a promise that would outlive him by eighteen years, arranging his own death so that it would save the maximum number of strangers and reach one small girl on a birthday he knew he wouldn’t see. That’s not something death can undo. A promise made in love, and kept by the people love touches, is stronger than any ending.
