Avoid placing these items in the baby’s sleep area:

  • Pillows
  • Loose blankets
  • Soft toys
  • Bumper pads
  • Sleep positioners
  • Other soft or loose objects

The safest setup is a firm, flat sleep surface with a fitted sheet and no loose bedding or soft objects.

The CDC also recommends that babies sleep in the same room as their caregiver, ideally until at least 6 months of age, but on a separate sleep surface rather than in the adult bed.

Sleeping Position During Pregnancy

Pregnancy can change which sleeping positions feel comfortable.

As pregnancy progresses, many people find side sleeping more comfortable.

If you’re pregnant and unsure about the safest sleeping position for your particular stage of pregnancy or medical situation, speak with your obstetrician or midwife for individualized guidance.

Do not rely on social-media claims that one sleeping position is universally dangerous for every pregnant person.
