The Wallet, the Pink Notice, and the Family Secret That Had Waited Twelve Years12

Nathaniel leaned forward.

“The ownership is layered through several companies, so we haven’t confirmed who ultimately controls your building.”

Claire looked down at the eviction notice.

“Our landlord changed last year.”

“Did the tenants receive notice of a sale?”

“We received a letter saying management had changed.”

“That isn’t necessarily the same thing.”

Claire’s brow furrowed.

“What are you saying?”

“I’m saying I don’t yet know who legally owns 114 Aldridge Street.”

Ruby raised her hand.

Everyone looked at her.

She lowered it.

“Sorry. School habit.”

Nathaniel smiled faintly.

“Go ahead.”

“If nobody knows who owns our building, can they still kick us out?”

Daniel answered carefully.

“Your mother should keep following the instructions on the notice for now. But before anything happens, we can help her understand whether the notice is valid and whether the company sending it has the authority it claims.”

Claire immediately stiffened.
