“Claire, where did you find this?”

“My mother’s records.”

“This changes something.”

Ruby sat straighter.

“What?”

“The refund wasn’t issued by Graves Energy.”

“We noticed.”

“Northbridge Asset Services was the company that acquired the mortgage note on the building six days before the tenant sale was canceled.”

Claire frowned.

“But Nathaniel said Graves still owned the property.”

“According to the documents he gave us, they did.”

“So how could someone else acquire the mortgage?”

“They could acquire debt secured by the building without owning the building.”

Mr. Harris leaned closer.

“English, please.”

Sofia laughed.

“Someone may have placed new debt against 114 Aldridge shortly before the cooperative purchase was supposed to close.”

Claire went quiet.

“Would that have prevented the sale?”

“Potentially.”

“Who owned Northbridge?”

“I don’t know yet.”

Ruby knew the answer before anyone said it.

“Voss?”

Sofia paused.

“I wouldn’t assume that without records.”

Ruby sank back.
