“Who’s that?”
“Nathaniel Graves.”
Silence.
Then Caleb gave a small, disbelieving laugh.
“Well. I guess Ruby really did return your wallet.”
Ruby’s eyes widened.
“How do you know about that?”
Caleb laughed again.
“Sofia told me enough to explain why she was calling.”
Ruby accepted this.
Nathaniel repeated the question.
“Do you still have the records?”
“No.”
Claire’s shoulders fell.
Caleb continued.
“But I know where they are.”
Everyone became still.
“Eleanor didn’t trust keeping everything in one apartment. She asked me to take copies to a lawyer.”
“Which lawyer?” Sofia asked.
“A woman named Miriam Bell.”
Sofia typed the name.
“Did she represent the tenants?”
“Not officially. She was a friend of Eleanor’s from church.”
Claire frowned.
“I remember Miriam.”
“She helped Eleanor create a statement about what had happened.”
“What statement?”
“Everything. The cooperative agreement. The canceled sale. The loan. Voss.”
Nathaniel’s voice was quiet.
