“Did Miriam ever contact Graves Energy?”

“She tried.”

Nathaniel looked away.

Caleb continued.

“Then Eleanor got sick.”

Claire squeezed Ruby’s hand.

“Why did you leave?”

This time Caleb took longer to answer.

“My father got a job in Virginia. He wanted me to go with him. I planned to stay in Aldridge.”

Claire remembered that.

Caleb had talked about starting an electrical apprenticeship.

Then, suddenly, his apartment had been empty.

“I visited Eleanor in the hospital,” Caleb said. “She told me the building fight might take years. She told me not to build my entire life around finishing something she had started.”

Claire’s expression softened.

“That sounds like her.”

“She also made me promise I’d tell you where the documents were.”

Claire stared at the phone.

“You didn’t.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“I came to your apartment the night before we moved. You were asleep at the hospital.”
